This year is proving to be quite a year for Bass fishing around our glorious coast. There also seems to be quite an increase in new lure anglers hunting those awesome Bass that we love to catch, even though conditions have played a big part as far as productivity goes, we, get into that in a bit.
Best Bass this year
The Bassman with a 76cm Beauty
Our best lure caught Bass so far this year is a 76cm beast caught off of Folkestone. This venue is further down the coast from our regular stomping ground of around Thanet, but usually, if conditions are not good here we sometimes have the opportunity to fish Folkestone, sometimes it’s not always good there either. This 76cm Bass was taken on a White Fiish Minnow, well into the night and gave an awesome battle, to say the least. The conditions for that night was a light North Easterly wind. The Bassman had another smaller fish but that was it. To be honest this venue has not really produced like it has in previous years.
With what seems a constant North East wind the conditions have been challenging to say the least, although things have improved this month of July especially. We can usually fish the north or the south coast of Thanet regardless but that North Easterly is a real bugger.
My 60cm Bass
Caught on a Tackle House Feed Shallow
Personally, I think earlier in the year the freezing bad weather ‘The Beast from the East’ has put our Bass fishing behind a couple of months. Even on the news, they showed footage of crabs and other shellfish washed up on the shoreline in devastating numbers. As you are aware this a great food source for Bass who will come into to hunt for them especially when they are at the crabs are at their molting stage.
Feature lure: Albie Snax
This is a soft plastic lure that has become a very popular lure, especially down the West Country and around the Isle of Wight. We tried the Albie Snax off the groins at Reculver Towers on the North side of our coast. These seemed to work in good strong tide run when everything else was not having the great effect. As you know in fishing, every day is different for me personally, especially fishing for Bass. Bass fishing can be like matching the hatch in trout fishing if you get my drift.
I also love the single hook, although when rigging the Albie Snax to sure there is a bit of freedom for the hook. This will improve your hook rate.
