The IMA Komomo 2
I never forget that very special day using this amazing lure: the IMA Komomo 2. That day, I was using the Joker version of this lure. It’s been my favourite pattern right from the off. That black and like a cotton candy pattern rainbow colour had caught my PB – a 67cm beautiful bass.
Yes, it was like I’d struck gold that day because I had also caught a Sea Trout that went off like a rocket, also taken on the Komomo 2. Now you can see why it became my favourite lure.

Why the Komomo 2 Stands Out
The Komomo 2 is one of those lures that feels alive in the water. It has a lovely, wide wobble that just oozes confidence when you’re winding it in. The action is slow and deliberate, and bass seem to love that natural look, especially when they’re feeding just under the surface.
It’s a lure that comes into its own over shallow ground. Whether you’re working it over reef, rock ledges, or weedy areas, it sits just beneath the surface, right where feeding bass love to ambush.

Best Conditions for the Komomo 2
This lure shines when there’s at least 2 feet of water under you. Any shallower than that, and you’re risking a snag — and trust me, you don’t want to lose one of these.
I tend to fish it on either a flooding or ebbing tide when the water’s moving and the fish are actively hunting. Calm to moderate choppy water is fine, but in heavy surf, it can struggle to hold its action. Early morning or evening is my sweet spot – especially if there’s a bit of colour in the water or a cloudy sky.
How to Fish the IMA Komomo 2
You don’t need to overwork this lure. A steady, slow retrieve is all it takes most of the time. If the water’s super calm or the fish are hesitant, I’ll throw in the odd pause or a subtle twitch just to mix it up.
Keep an eye on your rod tip — if you feel it knocking the rocks, stop and switch to something more suitable, like a weedless soft plastic. The Komomo 2 isn’t cheap, and you don’t want to sacrifice one just for the sake of another cast.
Top Colour Picks
The Joker is my go-to and has been from day one. That dark top with the pinkish underbelly has something about it. It stands out just enough without being too flashy.
If I’m fishing clear water on a bright day, I might go for something a bit more natural, like a sardine or silver finish. But when the light drops, or the water has a bit of murk, I’m straight back on the Joker or something darker that creates a strong silhouette.
Best Setup for the Komomo 2
I fish mine on a rod around 9ft with a medium-heavy rating — something that’s got enough tip to launch the lure but still gives you control. I usually have a 20lb braid with a 15lb fluorocarbon leader.
I personally use a clip so I can swap lures quickly, but I make sure it’s a decent quality one that won’t snap under pressure. The Komomo has a decent weight and aerodynamic shape, so casting it is a dream, but by no means the furthest casting lure – let’s just say it’s better distance than a Tackle House Feed Shallow 128.
Alternative Lures to Try
If the Komomo 2 isn’t doing the business, I’ve always got a few backups. The IMA Sasuke (although it dives deeper) is a good shout when the fish are sitting just a touch deeper, and the Xorus Patchinko is my favourite for working the surface if they’re smashing bait off the top.
When things get weedy or snaggy, I’ll switch to something like the Savage Gear Gravity Stick on a weedless hook — keeps you in the game without the risk of losing a lure.

FAQ: IMA Komomo 2
Q: What depth does the IMA Komomo 2 run at?
A: Around 5 to 20cm, depending on your retrieve speed and conditions. Also, if you’re standing on a promenade or pier, the Komomo will probably stay on the surface. The ideal scenario is to be at water level.
Q: When is the best time to use the IMA Komomo 2?
A: Flood or ebb tide fishing shallow ground, especially dawn, dusk, or overcast days, this lure can excel. But as the sun is going to fade on that flooding tide – hang on for dear life!
Q: What makes the ‘Joker’ pattern so effective?
A: It has a bold silhouette that stands out in coloured water and low light, it’s just one of those patterns that works. Also, when the sky is clear with a bright moon, any black lure can be the order of the day -So what colour is the Joker? Black.
Q: Can the Komomo 2 catch other species?
A: Definitely. I’ve had Sea Trout, and I know others who’ve hit Pollack and even the odd mackerel with this incredible lure. But sometimes those bass can be funny buggers the biggest task in lure fishing is finding the fish in the first place. Get that bit right and you’re laughing.
Q: What retrieval works best?
A: Slow and steady. Let the lure’s natural wobble do the work, with the occasional pause or twitch if needed. Another tip is to watch how the lure is behaving – your slow retrieve may be a lot faster than mine. You have to work that out for yourself.
Q: Can it handle rough seas?
A: struggles in rough water. Better suited to calmer conditions where you can maintain control.
Q: Is the Komomo 2 durable?
A: It’s well-built, but like all hard lures, it’s not indestructible. Avoid banging it over rocks or dragging it through kelp.
Final Thoughts
The IMA Komomo 2 has earned its place in my lure box through results, plain and simple. It’s not hype — this lure genuinely works, especially when you understand how and where to use it. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just starting out, it’s the kind of lure that can turn a blank into a session to remember. For me, the Komomo 2 isn’t just a bit of kit — it’s a winner for sure.
