Is the megabass Dark Sleeper My favourite lure for 2020?
Realistically, it’s going to be a close call. But the Megabass Dark Sleeper has one characteristic that for me stands out. It actually looks like a real fish. Amazingly, I can’t say that about some of the other lures I have seen over the years and used myself. So before I get into some of the success with this amazing lure, I want you to see how it came about in the first place.
Seeing The Dark MegaBass Dark Sleeper in Action
.The first time I came across this lure I had been messaging one of my lure-fishing pals from London. He had sent me a video of these French geezers fishing out in France and they were using the Mega Dark Sleeper in this film. What also got my attention was the fact that they were fishing through the night.
Extremely Good Conditions
In the video, it shows the French dude going through some lure with another bloke he was taking on this fishing trip with him. This is when I first saw the Megabass Dark Sleeper. Instantly, for me, it just looked amazing. Just the sort of prey I could imagine those hungry bass coming close to shore to feed on. They look so realistic.
So off they go to this rocky fishing location somewhere in France. I have to say that watching the video and seeing them tackling some of the waves is not really my cup of tea.
The reason is simple: sometimes those unpredictable waves can knock you off balance. Now if you haven’t got your wits about you you could inevitably get knocked over or something. Some if you do decide to stand in the water WEAR A LIFE JACKET.
The Size Of The Bass Was Amazing

My first attempt with the Amazing Megabass Dark Sleeper
Realistically, the next mission was to order some of these great-looking lures. I managed to get a couple on Amazon but was a bit concerned about the price.
But when you know you want something sometimes you just don’t care. That’s me in a nutshell. So they turned up and straight away I wanted to give them a bash to see if they were going to work.
The conditions are not always favourable for us locally
That’s an understatement. We are currently experiencing (August 2020) variable winds which seems like all the time. Ultimately means that water will not clear, even with the brilliant sunshine we are having. This is why you have to take that window of opportunity when it comes.
Normally anything southerly is pretty much on the money, as long as the wind isn’t howling with the good weather the water should clear. Now if the wind is either North Westerly or Westerly we can move around the coast. But it has to be consistent and it is definitely not.
My first attempt with the Dark Sleeper
So I decided to try a little spot right on my doorstep. At low tide, the rocky weedy ground looks amazing just the right-looking venue for bass. I had tried this place at high tide before but this was the same time as last year. Unfortunately, the weed was properly bad back then too. Although I wouldn’t say it was as bad as this year.
But as I started fishing every cast was the same. A couple of turns of the handle and you knew you had picked up the weed. I tried the surface to see if I could slip the lure over the top but to no avail.
Then, I put on the Savage Gear Sandeel (lemon back) that has always been a great lure at night time providing the conditions are right, meaning the water is deep enough but still, no good. So now I was ready to chuck the towel in but thought about putting the Megabass Dark Sleeper on and giving that a go.
The Hook is Concealed On the Dark Sleeper
Amazingly, the great thing about the Megabass Dark Sleeper is the hook is cleverly concealed by the fin on its back. Trust me it still picks up the weed but not as much as the other lures I had tried. I was using the Donko version that is once in weight so It didn’t cast that bad either. So I still carried on fishing but no fish.
Boredom set in so I tried something another tactic
Yes for some reason I was already in my head sitting at home with a cup tea, my brain had given up basically. But for some strange reason, I started reeling really slow and tapping the rod tip as if I was walking the dog. Then to my utter amazement, I was in.
At first, I thought it was a big lump of weed but I could feel the head shake from the fish. Then, that sinking feeling that most anglers have experienced from time to time, it just got off. I had another couple of casts but no luck so I buggered off home.
