So What Makes the IMA Hound 125F Glide a Winner?

Blimey! Where do I start? I’ve loved them, lost them, replaced them — and I just can’t leave home without one. Well, at least one, anyway.

Ever since I saw a local angler in the paper holding a 13-pound bass, I had to find out what he’d caught that beast on. To my amazement, it was the IMA Hound 125F Glide. So, what’s strange about that? Let me tell you — I’d seen this lure pop up on loads of online stores and never once batted an eyelid.
Big mistake.

What Colour Was I After?

Yes, there was one in particular – Cotton Candy. That exact pattern was what landed that monster bass. After that, I had to get my hands on one. Since then, I’ve ended up with nearly every pattern available.

Keith’s Top Tip: If a lure’s constantly sold out, it’s usually for a reason. Popular lures don’t hang around. So if you find one, grab it — or dig deep online until you do. Don’t worry, we can help you with that.

Where the Hound Glide Shines

The Hound Glide is a firm favourite of mine on high tides. Why? Because it dives deeper than your IMA Komomo II or Tackle House Feed Shallow. So if you’re fishing from higher ground — like a promenade — this lure is perfect for working just below the surface.

At night, it really comes into its own. The Yellow Chart in the IMA Sonic 100 (its smaller sibling) has been absolutely devastating, especially after dark.

So, Why Mention the IMA Sonic 100?

It’s not about the lure itself — it’s about the colour.

We couldn’t find an all-chartreuse version with the green head (like the Sonic 100) in the 125F Hound range. So instead, we opted for the Bone pattern, which has a slight glow belly. Still a great choice.

But don’t get me wrong — there’s a whole bucketload of good Hounds out there.

Keith’s Tip: Don’t be afraid to fish this lure slow — really slow. It’s often the key when the bass are mooching about.

The Retrieve: This Is Gold

One day while walking along the beach at low tide, I noticed that on the edge of this sandy bay (where the rocks start), something that got my attention. The rocks on that slight corner were closer to the promenade. To cut a long story we fished this venue at night and hit the jackpot.

Ok, that’s great, but what about the retrieve?

Well, here it is, and I’m not being big-headed, this information is GOLD. As we were fishing away me my buddy and I proceeded to hook an astounding nine bass virtually on the trot. My friend was in total disbelief at what he’d been witnessing. The difference in my success was that I literally slowed my retrieve down to a 4 to 5-second count to every turn of the handle. There must have been hundreds of fish there. I could feel those bass pecking away the minute my Hound Glide hit the water. My mate was mortified at my success, so I shared the secret with him. Then “Bob’s ya uncle” Bang! He was straight into a fish – you couldn’t make it up. He then went on catching for the rest of the session.

How well Does The IMA Hound 125f Glide cast?

Another key factor with this incredible lure – it casts out like a missile, especially compared to the likes of the Komomo 2. This was also a key factor on those nights we crushed it. The bass were at quite a distance. Is that always the case? No. Do you always catch them like that? Definitely no. And to be totally honest, that amazing week of bass fishing is a distant memory now. Things change – the fish have not been there in abundance since then. Yes, we’ve caught them, but not as many that week. So please don’t think this is a miracle lure, it isn’t. Would I ever lure it at home? Definitely not.

FAQs About the IMA Hound 125f Glide

Is the IMA Hound 125f Glide good for beginners?

Yes — it’s actually one of the more forgiving lures out there. Just slow your retrieve right down, and let the action do the work. You don’t need to twitch or overthink it. Perfect for anyone learning how bass respond to sub-surface lures.

What’s the best retrieve for the IMA Hound 125f Glide?

Go slow — I mean slow at night. Think 4 to 5 seconds per turn of the handle, as mentioned earlier. It feels weird at first, but trust me, that slow glide is what draws in the fish, especially at night or when bass are moving cautiously. Failing that, just experiment. Maybe a quick burst when you first cast out. Try pausing. Just remember this lure catches fish, if none of them are working, there’s probably no fish.

How does it compare to the IMA Komomo II?

The Hound 125F Glide casts further and dives deeper. It’s a better choice if you’re fishing from a height like a promenade or casting over a drop-off. The Komomo II has more of a shimmy and sits just below the surface, so ideal for shallower water.

Does the Hound 125f work in rough conditions?

It handles chop well for a glider, but you’ll get the best out of it when the water’s got a bit of movement but isn’t wild. On calmer nights with some tide pull — magic.

What braid and leader setup works best?

I like to pair it with a medium-power rod, 20–25lb braid, and a 20–25lb fluorocarbon leader. The lure handles a bit of line drag, and you’ll want the leader strength in case you’re working around rocks.

Which colour is best?

Tough one! For me, it’s Cotton Candy and Chart Back Bone. But if you can find something with a glow belly for night sessions, grab it.
